Who We Are

At the heart of cancer research is the Glasgow Centre for Cancer Research (GCCR), which encompasses basic, translational and clinical research under the scientific leadership of its first Director Professor Karen Vousden, and the clinical leadership of Professor Jim Cassidy. The GCCR encompasses The Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, a centre of scientific excellence that is core-funded by Cancer Research UK and directed by Professor Vousden, the University of Glasgow’s Division of Cancer Sciences and Molecular Pathology headed by Professor Cassidy and the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre under the academic leadership of Professor Tessa Holyoake. The mission of the GCCR is to develop a coordinated strategy for cancer research in Glasgow.

Less than 2 miles from the GCCR lies the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre (BWSCC). With a consultant staff approaching 50, the BWSCC is one of the largest cancer treatment centres in the UK, serving some 2.8 million people across the region. It also houses the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit, where NHS consultants take an active and often lead role in clinical trials. The radiotherapy research and development work, in particular, is fundamental to this. The Medical Director of the Centre, Professor Alan Rodger, and his senior medical staff are committed to developing, funding and integrating basic, translational and clinical research with core NHS activities.
